Safe cabinet lifting practices with the RL3500S and RL5000S
Moving a fully loaded cabinet is one of the most hazardous jobs on the floor. One technician and a pair of USA-built cabinet lifters replace a four-person derack.
In U.S. data centers, moving a fully loaded server cabinet is still one of the most hazardous tasks on the floor. The old method is a crew, downtime, and a full derack. The RackLift® RL3500S manual cabinet lifter; and the battery-electric RL5000S; let a single technician lift and relocate a live cabinet (5,000 lb standard, 6,000 lb with optional stainless upgrade) without pulling the equipment.
RackLift® is manufactured with American steel and aluminum, assembled in Colorado. RackLift lifts are built for raised floors, containment aisles, and standard doorways; not for a warehouse dock.
Why safe lifting matters
Heavy lifting drives workplace injuries, lost time, and damage to expensive IT equipment. OSHA guidance is to minimize manual lifts over 50 lb and to use mechanical aids wherever the load exceeds that. The RL3500S answers that with a synchronized pair of lifting units and high-ratio gearing so one operator can raise the load without a team.
- One-person operation; fewer people in the aisle, less coordination risk.
- Minimal floor loading; the weight spreads across eight dual casters.
- Compact footprint; about 23″ × 23″ per side, 704 aluminum, ~114 lb per side on the RL3500S.
- 13″ of lift; enough to clear pallets and floor tiles.
- Retractable straps, anti-slip bars, optional shoes and pinch blocks for 31″ and side-lift cabinets.
Before you lift
- 01Inspect both units for bent parts, loose hardware, or worn casters. Do not use a damaged unit; call 1-833-827-1889 or local 321-465-9388.
- 02Confirm the cabinet weight, contents included, is under the unit's rating (5,000 lb standard, 6,000 lb with optional stainless upgrade) and that the load is even.
- 03Clear the path. Flat, level floor. No ramps. Check sprinklers, lights, and doorway height.
- 04Wear PPE. Operators should know the manual shipped with the unit.
- 05Fit optional shoes or pinch blocks for the cabinet width you actually have.
How the RL3500S is run
Two units, one at each end of the cabinet.
- 01Roll each unit in so the lifting shoe sits under the cabinet base. Insertion clearance is about 1.70″.
- 02Strap the cabinet between the two units. Engage E-Track tie-downs on current production.
- 03Crank one side a little, then the other, until the cabinet is off the tiles. Transport height around 4″ is typical.
- 04Steer slowly. Watch raised-floor gaps and thresholds. Never leave a raised load unattended.
- 05Lower by cranking the other way, unstrap, and pull the units clear.
Keep hands and feet out from under the load. Do not climb on a RackLift®. The RL5000S is the same job with a synchronized up/down switch when the moves are frequent.
What changes on the floor
Halls that spec the RL3500S or RL5000S report fewer injuries, no derack on a relocation, and one technician finishing what used to take a crew. People and equipment are worth it.
