Musculoskeletal disorders in the data center

MSDs cost American businesses tens of billions a year. Overexertion is still how technicians get hurt when the lift is a pair of human backs.

Musculoskeletal disorders cost American businesses more than $45 billion a year in workers’ compensation, insurance, and lost productivity. Sprains, strains, and tendonitis from forceful exertion, awkward posture, and repetition are the daily risk when a technician is the lift.

Liberty Mutual has put overexertion injuries at about $13.4 billion a year for U.S. employers. Federal data has long shown roughly a third of occupational injuries with time away from work are MSD-related. Direct medical cost is only half the story; replacement training and legal follow-on often match it. A single musculoskeletal incident commonly lands between $48,000 and $67,000.

OSHA’s practical ceiling for a manual lift is 50 lb. A modern switch is not 50 lb. Design the task so most of the workforce can do it without becoming the forklift. That is what a cabinet lifter, a device lift, and an electric tug are for.
